Samsung is known to use two chipsets in their flagship series, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon and Exynos chips. The Snapdragon models are usually only available in select markets such as the US. Other markets around the world typically get the Exynos variant. However, that is changing with the upcoming Galaxy S23.
Qualcomm has confirmed in a recent investor call that the upcoming Galaxy S23 series will be exclusively powered by Snapdragon chips worldwide. This means that Samsung will most likely be abandoning the Exynos chip from future flagships as well. The news was confirmed by the chief financial officer Akash Palkhiwala, who also noted that around 75% of the Galaxy S22 models available in the market were powered using Snapdragon chips.
The president and CEO of Qualcomm, Cristiano Amoon, also backed the confirmation by stating that all future flagships from the Korean tech giant will not use the Exynos processor. Instead, all phones will be shipped with Snapdragon chips. Amon also noted that they had entered into a multi-year agreement with Samsung. This agreement expanded the use of the Snapdragon chip for all future premium Samsung Galaxy products globally.
This announcement adds credibility to Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst. He had speculated earlier that Samsung will be forgoing their Exynos chip and will make a switch to Qualcomm processors for their flagship models after the Samsung Galaxy S22. According to the statement made by the CEO of Qualcomm, it seems as if all the models succeeding the Galaxy S23 will also be exclusively Snapdragon-powered phones.
Although this change will not affect the US market, it is a win for those worldwide who had to grapple with Exynos-powered Samsungs. Users of Exynos-powered Samsung phones often complained about slow performance, so switching to a Snapdragon is likely to improve their experience considerably.
After the news of Qualcomm partnering with Samsung hit the internet, an unlocked version of the Galaxy S23+ appeared on Geekbench. This phone was reportedly running on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, and the results suggest that the phone runs Android 13 and has at least 8GB of RAM.
