Steam Is Set To Carry Ubisoft Games Again

Steam has arguably been one the biggest sites to carry PC games, which is why players found it strange when Ubisoft refused to release its games on the site. However, they have slowly started coming back to the platform after releasing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Anno 1800, and Roller Champions to Steam.

Spokesperson Jessica Roache voiced that Ubisoft was constantly evaluating how they could introduce their games to various audiences while also providing a consistent player ecosystem through their native platform, Ubisoft Connect. However, she declined to comment on whether or not this was a permanent setup. Only time will tell if Ubisoft will continue to release games on Steam or will decide on a case-by-case basis.

The reason why Ubisoft stopped releasing games on Steam is unclear. Still, Valhalla, the flagship game of 2020, might be why they decided to release it on Steam. The next game in the series, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, is not due for release till 2023. It would be interesting to see if the game developers will consider giving the game a Steam release. Otherwise, players may have to wait years, just like they did with Valhalla.

Alongside Valhalla, Roller Champion was also given a Steam release. This game is a relatively new one, as it was released this May. Anno 1800’s case is a bit strange because the game was already released on Steam previously but had been removed in 2019.

This step may seem bizarre to some, but the reason why Ubisoft refrained from releasing their games on Steam was to make them exclusive to the Epic Games Store instead. The company famously gave publishers a very attractive offer worth millions to attract them to their own site. Epic reportedly paid $146 million to make Borderland 3, by 2K Games, exclusive to their own platform.

In her statement, Roache also clarified that Ubisoft never stopped its relationship with Valve. This holds true because Ubisoft continued to release various DLCs, but their main games stopped appearing on Steam. Other Ubisoft games removed from Steam include Anno 2070, Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic, Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD, and Space Junkies.
