SID Display Week brings with it exciting innovations in the sphere of screen technology. Samsung Display aims to be the talk of the town by revealing its brand-new biosensor display. According to the Samsung Display press release, the company is set to reveal a Sensor OLED display that will be able to recognize a user’s fingerprints when they press their finger anywhere on the display. Samsung states that this new technology will be able to measure a person’s stress levels, blood pressure, and heart rate.
Samsung’s OLED display has a light-sensing organic photodiode (OPD) embedded within the display. This development removes the need for companies to insert a separate module underneath the initial panel. Therefore, it frees up space within the device for other modules. OLED light is used to provide these critical cardiovascular measurements, which occurs when light is refracted differently depending on the contraction and relaxation of blood vessels within the finger. According to Samsung, when this refracted light returns to the panel, the OPD collects the light and converts the data into information that can be used to understand the user’s health.
Samsung has continued to show its focus on health-oriented devices, such as the planned update for the Galaxy Watch 5. The watch can send out irregular heart rhythm notifications. This technology recently passed the FDA checks and will be available for customers to use. Allowing users to keep tabs on their cardiovascular health through a screen would be a welcome feature in the industry, as customers will be able to monitor their health without needing a watch.
Samsung Display is expected to unveil a few more projects, such as the Rollable Flex. This is expected to be a screen that can roll and unroll over an O-shaped axis. A large display using this technology can expand from 49mm to 254.4mm. This wouldn’t be the first time Samsung has shown off a rollable display, as the company has been interested in the idea of rollable smartphones for a while.
Samsung is also expected to showcase the Flex In and Out, which will be a smartphone device like the Galaxy Z Fold 4, which can fold in and out 360 degrees. If this technology takes off, foldable phones will become much thinner in the future.
