Arcane Is Now the First Emmy-Winning Gaming Show

Arcane or Arcane: League of Legends is an animated television series created by Alex Yee and Christian Linke. It was announced at the 10th-anniversary celebration of League of Legends in 2019 and was released in 2021. The show follows two sisters, Vi and Jinx, who are trying to navigate through the unrest of the affluent city of Piltover and the oppressed undercity, Zaun.

The show became a massive hit for both Netflix and Riot games as it topped multiple charts worldwide. Now, it has even managed to become the first streaming show and the first show based on a video game to win multiple Emmys.

The most significant award that the show took home was one for Outstanding Animated Program, which was awarded at the Creative Arts ceremony. For this category, Arcane was able to beat Rick and Morty, Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons, and Marvel’s What If?

Christian Linke, the co-creator of the show, received the award on behalf of the creative team and thanked everyone for the award. He expressed his gratitude towards those who embraced the character and their story, towards the fans of the games, and to Netflix and Riot games for helping them through the process.

Due to the show’s popularity, Arcane was renewed for a second season before the Emmy wins. Riot also bought a part of the animation studio that worked on the show. Using the animation studio, they have also released a documentary called Bridging the Rift, which revolves around the making of the show.

There is a discourse on the internet as to whether Bandersnatch, a Black Mirror episode, could be considered the first videogame to win an Emmy. However, Black Mirror cannot be classified as a videogame show, while Arcane is clearly marketed as a League of Legends spinoff.

Counting the Emmy, Arcane now has ten awards to its name as it previously won nine Annie Awards. With the second season in the works, the show’s popularity will only shoot up from here.
