Corning has made advancements in their glass technology and has finally revealed it to the public through a blog post. This new glass is called the Gorilla Glass Victus 2. It is said to have a new glass composition pushing boundaries of phone display survivability. The company states that the new glass display has improved drop performance on hard surfaces, such as concrete.
The new Gorilla Glass Victus 2 has been put through several drop tests in Corning’s lab. During these tests, it has been shown to survive a one-meter drop on material like concrete. According to Corning, competitors would most likely shatter in such tests even if they were closer to the ground. This proves that the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 will be the most robust display ever released.
The display has also been shown to survive a two-meter drop on an asphalt replication. During this test, it also managed to maintain its scratch-resistant capabilities. David Velasquez, the vice president, and general manager of Gorilla Glass, stated that they really challenged their scientists with the Victus 2.
They were told to create a glass composition that would be able to survive drops from waist height on rough rougher surfaces than asphalt. Additionally, the scientists were also tasked to improve the cover-glass performance for more extensive and heavier devices. The reasoning behind their requests was the ever-increasing size and weight of phones. Generally, larger and heavier phones are difficult to protect, which is why Corning was adamant about creating a glass composition that could protect even the heaviest of phones.
Additionally, Corning estimated through their research that 84% of consumers in the biggest smartphone markets were most concerned with durability when purchasing new phones. Therefore, new phones need to be drop and are scratch-resistant to sell well. Currently, the Gorilla Glas Victus 2 is being tested in customers’ hands and will most likely be released in the next few months.
Keeping this timeline in mind, it is likely that the Samsung Galaxy S23 series may utilize the Corning Gorilla glass Victus 2 to improve drop performance and scratch resistance.
