Did you recently subscribe to Disney Plus? Are you planning to do so very soon?
Since its launch in November of 2019, Disney Plus has experienced rapid growth. Disney’s streaming service now boasts of over 60 million subscribers worldwide. Since we know that Disney caters to children, Disney Plus’ content is relatively safe for kids.
However, not all shows are age-appropriate. Some shows cater to specific age groups of children. Hence, there is a need for Disney Plus parental controls.
But does Disney Plus have parental controls? If so, how do you turn on this feature? How effective can it be?
Continue reading below for the answers to this important matter.
The Anchor of the Disney Plus Parental Controls
Let us first answer the big question: Are there parental controls on Disney Plus? The answer is, “yes!” However, the parental controls set up rely on creating a special Kids Profile.
Hence, the first thing you should do upon subscribing to Disney Plus is to create your child’s profile. The good thing about this is you can create multiple profiles for each of your children. Creating a profile helps streamline the content they are viewing.
Children have different preferences regarding the cartoons that they watch. Younger kids watch a different set of shows compared to teenagers.
The Kids Profile will only show content that carries a “G” rating from the Motion Pictures Association of America. Moreover, it will only showcase TV shows that have “G” ratings from the TV-7FV by the US TV Parental Guidelines.
Additionally, it simplifies both the mobile and web user interfaces of Disney Plus. This will make it easier for your children to understand how the app works.
Setting Up Your Child’s Profile
Setting up your child’s profile on Disney Plus is as easy as setting it up on your Apple TV. Check https://setapp.com/how-to/get-disney-plus-on-apple-tv to learn how to set up Disney Plus on Apple TV.
To set up the Kids Profile from scratch, launch the Disney Plus app and sign in to your account. Look for the small profile icon at the bottom-right corner of the screen. Hit “Edit Profiles” then tap “Add Profile.”
Next, you want to pick an icon for the profile. You can choose your child’s favorite Disney character for the icon. After that, enter a name for the profile then tap the toggle switch.
You will find this towards the right of the Kids Profile heading. Tap “Save” to complete the process. Now, your child can enjoy safe and worry-free viewing of various Disney content.
Setting Up on an Existing Profile
If your child already has an existing profile, it is easy to enable the Disney Plus account settings’ parental controls. Launch the app and log in if needed. Tap the profile icon then select “Edit Profiles” after.
From there, tap the profile of your child. Hit the toggle switch to the right of the heading and tap “Save” to complete the process.
More on the App’s Safety
One of the most common concerns of parents regarding Disney Plus’s content is its safety. As we mentioned earlier, Disney has an extensive library of shows and movies. There are content appropriate for teens that your grade-schooler shouldn’t be watching.
Thus, the question remains: is Disney Plus truly safe for your kids? The answer is “yes,” as long as you maintain a certain amount of supervision for your child who is not yet in his teens.
Keep in mind that the Disney Plus app doesn’t come with any R-rated content. The most serious content it carries belongs to the R-13 category. Hence, your teens should be fine, but not your younger kids without your supervision.
If you have multiple profiles on the app, your younger children may switch the profiles without your knowledge. In turn, they may see content that is inappropriate or too scary for them.
Other Key Concerns
Though the Kids Profile can help you filter what your child can watch, it doesn’t put a limit to their screen time. Studies reveal that too much screen time can result in behavioral problems.
Children who watched TV for more than 2 hours a day developed sleeping problems. Moreover, they had issues with their attention span and exhibited aggressive behavior.
The Disney Plus app doesn’t come with any time controls. Without proper parental supervision, your child can watch all the shows she wants until she becomes bored or tired.
Thankfully, there are supplementary options to help you manage screen time. You can invest in Net Nanny. It is a content-control software that you can integrate with your Disney Plus app.
From there, you can create schedules and restrict certain shows that are age-inappropriate. It comes with a Pause feature that stops the viewing depending on the schedule that you set.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Subscription
Though Disney Plus may seem simple to navigate, certain tips and tricks will help you maximize your subscription. For starters, you can create a playlist for your child. Look for the “+” icon beside the play button.
From there, go to the top of the screen where you can find the Disney Plus toolbar. Open the Watchlist and start adding the titles that you want.
To make your content search faster, tap the magnifying glass icon. This will open the Explore option feature that narrows down the content to different collections. So instead of scrolling down, you can go to particular sections and collections with ease.
And if your child wants to watch a Disney film that is not yet on the service, you can request to add it to the service. Open the Help Center and click “Give Feedback.” Go to the search bar then pick “Request a Film or Show.”
