LineageOS is one of the leading custom ROM projects that provide aging Android devices with a new life when the company stops providing software support. However, the latest version of the LineageOS offers support for Google’s most recent flagship phones, including the Google Pixel 6a, Pixel 6, and Pixel 7 series. The news was revealed by 9to5Google, who confirmed that modding capabilities would now be available to Google phone owners.
This unexpected news comes at a time when the phones are still under Google’s update schedule and will remain so over the long term. The official debut of the LineageOS 20 was made in January when several improvements were made. These included a new camera app called Aperture. This was based on Google’s CameraX library and offered a near-stock camera app experience.
The custom ROM came to the Pixel 2 series last month and breathed life into the mobile phone as it introduced Android 13. This made a massive difference to these devices as official support for them ended in 2020 with the release of Android 11. However, thanks to LineageOS 20, their service has been extended, albeit unofficially.
Other than the Google devices, LineageOS 20 recently became available for the Redmi Note 9, OnePlus 9R, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.0 Wi-Fi, and the Sony Xperia 5 II, according to XDA Developers. For the current Pixel 6 and 7 series owners, the availability of the LineageOS will not mean much unless they want modding access on their phones. Then, it will be a game changer.
9to5, who revealed this information, notes that although the LineageOS 20 builds are not currently available to download right now for the Pixel 6 and 7 series, they should be available in the next few days.
It is important to note that Lineage OS does not come with Google’s preinstalled apps. Therefore, you will need to download and flash a GApps package if you want to use any google Apps. Ensure that you make a complete backup of your data before you do so.
