After the release of the Google Pixel 7 series, the Pixel 8 is the next awaited product from Google. According to the company’s schedule and leaked information, it will be releasing its Pixel 8 and 8 Pro this fall. As customers await more details regarding the phone, it has reportedly hit the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). This is a regulatory process that certifies the device’s wireless charging capabilities. Rumors suggest the Pixel 8 has been registered to bear the GKWS6 model number. These rumors were confirmed by 9 to 5 Google.
Last year’s Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro also had wireless charging and arrived at WPC a week before their official release. If Google plans on following its regular release schedule, the Pixel 8 seems to have reached a little early. This has allowed potential customers to get a feel of what to expect from the upcoming Google phones. However, it seems like they will be disappointed by the news.
Likely, Pixel 8 won’t see any improvements in the wireless charging speeds if the WPC listings are correct. They show the Pixel 8 to have the same speeds as the Pixel 7 from last year, a limited 12W. Compared to other devices like the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra with its 15W, it is slower.
Additionally, it seems like Pixel 8 will likely not have Qi2 wireless charging announced earlier this year. This speculation is based on the version number. According to WPC, Qi2 is a new wireless charging standard that aims to unify the industry and provide enhanced convenience and efficiency for mobile devices and wearables. This technology works similarly to Apple’s MagSafe wireless charging methods involving magnets surrounding the device that aligns with magnets on the charging accessory.
However, there is still hope, as only the Pixel 8 was spotted at the WPC. Thus, it is possible that the rumored Pixel 8 Pro will have support for Qi2 wireless charging with support for 15W cheating. Such details will likely remain speculative until Google officially releases the phone.
