Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world adventure title that Harry Potter fans have been asking for, for years. Still, now that it has been released, people are calling for it to be boycotted. The main reason for this boycott is Rowling’s public comments regarding transgender people. Despite this controversy, many have predicted Hogwarts Legacy to be the biggest-selling game of 2023 due to the nostalgia factor.
The title has reportedly already broken records for the number of people watching streamers play a preview copy of the game. At one point, around 1.3 million people were watching content related to the game on Twitch, a popular streaming platform. Although everyone is aware of the boycott, they have chosen to play it, arguing that playing and enjoying the game does not mean they support the author’s point of view and statements regarding transgender people.
The game takes the players to Hogwarts, a wizarding school that Ron, Harry, and Hermoine visited, but the catch is you will be attending before their time, in the 1800s. The critical reaction to the game has been positive, as the Metacritic score for the PlayStation 5 version is 86%. However, not everyone had a positive review of the game. Keza MacDonald, the Guardian’s game editor, was not as enthusiastic and stated that the game’s magic was from its setting and there was nothing spectacular about the game itself. She felt that the game was too similar to others in the same genre, and there was nothing that stood out.
A reviewer for IGN, Travis Northup, stated that the open-world adventure of Hogwarts Legacy accurately captures the excitement and wonder of the Wizarding world. To him, the characters, combat, and challenges were wonderfully executed. Although he scored it 9 out of 10, he commented that there were some technical issues and the main store was lackluster. The enemy variety could also have been better.
Despite people enjoying the game, many have distanced themselves from it and are calling others to the same. The idea behind the boycott was to send a clear message to JK Rowling that her statements were hurtful to a community of people and that they won’t be purchasing the game that would support her monetarily.
