Huawei returned with the Mate 50 after pausing the series in 2021. The Huawei Mate 50 Pro is a top-of-the-line phone with a large 6.7-inch QHD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The rear also sports a triple camera system with a 50MP primary sensor. Even though the camera setup sounds like any other Android phone, the Mate 50 has a variable aperture.
This aperture has 10 stops between f/1.4 and f/4, while other phones were limited to two aperture stops. Besides the primary camera, there is a 13MP ultrawide camera and a 64MP periscope telephoto lens. The selfie camera is a 13MP camera with a ToF sensor.
On the inside, the Huawei Mate 50 Pro has the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, Qualcomm’s latest chip, but it is a 4G version. Despite the lack of 5G, the Mate 50 series also has satellite connectivity, which is the next big thing in mobile technology.
Satellite connectivity has become a sort of a space race for smartphone manufacturers. Apple has been rumored to be bringing satellite network to their new series, the iPhone 14, and it has. Android 14 will gain satellite connectivity after the T-mobile / SpaceX partnership.
The Huawei Mate 50 Pro, launched worldwide, comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which the user can expand. Furthermore, it has a 4,700 mAh battery that can support 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.
The global launch of this series will also include the standard Mate 50, which is quite similar to the Mate 50 Pro. The significant difference is that the refresh rate is lowered to 90Hz, and the battery is smaller at 4,460mAh. The telephoto lens also has a less powerful sensor of 12MP. The only other difference is the lack of a notch and a flatter display.
The Mate 50 series is expected to be released globally, but they might skip the US. The pricing starts from £1299 for 256GB and can cost up to £1399 for a more expensive variant with orange leather.
These high prices have divided fans because there is no 5G or Google services, making this phone hard to recommend.
