During Apple’s WWDC 2022 event, the new model of the MacBook Air was unveiled. This unveiling took place during the keynote and showed a brand new squared-off laptop that looks closer to the design of the 14-inch MacBook Pro.
Apple has replaced the traditional wedge shape of the Air and has opted for a more clean look. It is 11mm. Thick and weighs around 2.7 pounds. It also comes in a variety of colors, including traditional silver and space grey. The new colors include starlight and midnight. Starlight is a gold color, while midnight is blue.
With each laptop, Apple has included a MagSafe cable that matches the colorway, as the new MacBook Air now has MagSafe charging. The two Thunderbolt USB ports and the headphone jacks from the previous model have carried on from the previous design.
The biggest difference, however, is the new M2 chip. Apple states that the performance is 1.4x that of the M1, depending on the task. The standard M2 has only eight GPU cores, and the Air comes with only 8GB of unified memory by default. If you opt for 16GB or 24GB, you will have to pay $200 and $400 extra respectively.
Apple also claims that the new MacBooks are 38% faster in video editing performance, and the image filters and effects performance is 20% faster. However, the apps used for these tests were not mentioned.
Apple stated that the battery life of the MacBook Air would be 18 hours, and although unrealistic, the new MacBook Air will most likely have the same all-day battery life as the M1 Air.
The display of the MacBook is now larger and measures 13.6 inches, and is closer to the lid because Apple has decided to place the 1080p webcam in a notch. The display has 500 nits of brightness and supports the P3 wide color gamut.
