The MediaTek Dimensity 9200 was a pleasant surprise last year with its energy-efficient performance, hardware-based ray tracing, and Wi-Fi 7 support. However, it looks like MediaTek plans to take the chip further and turn up the performance meter to make it better and more powerful than ever. On Wednesday, MediaTek took the processor and announced a better version. When comparing the two, there is a clock speed boost with the main Arm Cortex-X3 core (3.35GHz vs. 3.05GHz). Additionally, the three Cortex-A715 performance cores jump from 2.85GHz to 3GHz.
MediaTek has also improved the efficiency of cores, and they now range from 1.8GHz to 2GHz. The Immortalis-G715 GPU has received a 17% boost as well. This chip is much more powerful when compared to other brands like Qualcomm. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip only has a 3.36GHz top clock speed for its Cortex-X3, and the performance core remains fixed at 2.8GHz.
Due to its clock speed, it is possible that the phones using 9200+ launching this May could break the Galaxy S23 in raw speed since there is possibly no other mobile processor that has broken the 3GHz threshold with secondary cores. It is exciting to see if such high secondary cores can lead to real performance gains. The Deputy GM of Wireless Comms, Dr. Yenchi Lee, stated that they would work to raise the bar for power efficiency and flagship performance with their chips. They want to ensure device makers have the most efficient chips to make their phones more powerful and useful.
Besides overclocking the chip, the Dimensity 9200+ is the same as the Dimensity 9200 CPU. So far, the Dimensity 9200 has only been seen in phones like the Vivo X6 Pro and Vivo X90 Pro. Only time will tell how good the chip actually is and whether or not the phones using them will match up to some of the best Android phones using Tensor or Snapdragon hardware.
