Nothing Plans To Use an Old Processor for Their Nothing Phone (2)

The Nothing Phone (2) was confirmed earlier this month by Carl Pei, Nothing’s CEO, as the company’s second flagship phone. He revealed that the phone would be using a Snapdragon 8 series chip but did not confirm the exact chip. Now, due to a slip-up by a Qualcomm executive, the exact chip that will power this new phone has been revealed.

The Nothing Phone (2) announcement was made at the Mobile World Congress 2023, where Carl Pei revealed that the Nothing Phone (1) would be getting a mighty successor and would be powered using a powerful flagship processor from Qualcomm. However, he never specified which chip it would be. Naturally, everyone assumed that the company would use the best chip on the market, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, since it was used in some of the best Android flagship phones, such as the Galaxy S23 series and the OnePlus 11.

The chipset actually being used was disclosed thanks to an accidental slip by Alex Katouzian, Qualcomm’s SVP, in a LinkedIn post. Although the post has now been deleted, it congratulated the Nothing team for announcing the Phone (2) and mentioned that the phone would come with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, a chip from last year.

If this turns out to be accurate, it won’t be such bad news as people are expecting. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip is powerful and successful. It has proven its power through android devices such as the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and other flagship phones. Furthermore, plenty of flagship phones are launching with this chip even in 2023. However, there is no doubt that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is a significant step up from older chips.

Despite the chip the Phone (2) will ship with, the phone will be a significant and much-anticipated upgrade from the Phone (1). Their current phone from the brand is considered a mid-range phone as it uses the Snapdragon 778G+ chip. So, even if they move to the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, the phone will see a significant upgrade in performance. Additionally, it will also allow the phone to keep its prices competitive while also improving the phone’s performance.
