Nothing has continued to update its mindset, and it is now looking to adopt some positive environmental features with its new phone. The London-based startup took to Twitter to give potential buyers a look into its upcoming smartphone, the Phone (2). The company posted a lengthy threat where it announced that the Phone (2) would receive three years of Android OS updates and four years of security updates. This makes the phone much more appealing as customers can use it for extended periods.
In its post, Nothing also details various ways the upcoming Phone (2) will reduce its carbon footprint. The company claims that the phone will sport an SGS-certified carbon footprint of 53.45kg, which is lower than that of the Phone (1). There is also a significant achievement in boosting the phone’s overall performance. In terms of the materials used, the Nothing Phone (2) will be made using 100% recycled aluminum and 100% recycled copper. The latter makes up the main circuit board, and 80% of the plastic parts used in the phone have been sourced sustainably.
Nothing also states that the consumers will find the unboxing experience utterly devoid of plastic. The Phone (2) will come packaged in a box using over 60% FSC Mix-certified recycled fiber. One of the last things announced in the Twitter post was Nothing’s partnership with Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) and IRMA to bolster its environmentally safe practices.
In an interview with Nothing CEO Carl Pei, he discussed how he would like to take on Apple. The Phone (2) is set to launch globally in July. This will be momentous for Nothing as it will enter the US market for the first time. The US market is currently heavily dominated by Apple, so this induction will indicate whether or not Nothing is set to take on Apple. Pei also mentioned the increased battery size of the phone, which has increased from 4500mAh to 4700mAh. The upcoming device will also have a larger display.
There has also been speculation as to why Pei has decided to use an older chip rather than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which is Qualcomm’s newest. He explained that the SD 8+ Gen 1 is a proven processor which has been thoroughly tested and continuously optimized through updates. This makes it a much better option compared to a newer chip.
