Rumors of Samsung developing and releasing a Galaxy S23 FE have been swirling around the internet despite them not releasing the S22 FE. According to various sources, Samsung has decided to release the Galaxy S23 FE in the second half of the year in place of the Galaxy A74 and may use an old chip to keep the prices competitive. This rumor comes from tipster Conner who revealed on Twitter that Samsung has decided that the Galaxy S23 FE won’t use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip like the other models in the S23 lineup.
With this announcement, many assumed that the company would probably use last year’s chipset, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. This chip was announced in May 2022 and addressed some of the performance issues that phones using its predecessor were having. This included phones like Galaxy S22. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 at its time was fast and efficient. Despite this chip being older, it is not by any means slow or less powerful.
Some of Samsung’s best phones, including their latest foldable phone series, use this chip because they were released in the second half of 2022 when the chip was newly released. By forgoing the latest and greatest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in favor of an older chip, it seems as if Samsung wants to keep the price down for their latest phone. Besides the chip, the Samsung FE will likely have all the same specs as Samsung’s latest flagship.
Although the Samsung Galaxy S23 has a lot of competition, such as the Pixel 6a, it is having trouble selling because it is almost double the price. Additionally, with the rumored release of Pixel 7a, Samsung will have to make their phones have competitive prices.
By using the best chip, the phones will likely be expensive, which is why using an older chip might work in the company’s favor and help drive sales. In terms of design, the FE version will likely have a plastic chassis and a smaller display and battery.
