Samsung’s Z Fold series has been quite popular, receiving an upgraded model each year. Even though they have just launched its flagship S23 series, customers are looking to see what the company will do with its Fold series this year. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is set to launch in the second half of 2023. Reports from insiders suggest that Samsung is already testing its new design to ensure it is durable enough to be included in the Galaxy Z Fold 5.
This news comes from The Elec, which reports that Samsung’s new hinge design is going through a folding durability test to ensure that it can handle being opened and closed 200,000 times at minimum and 300,000 times at maximum. The testing will reportedly start this week. However, compared to other foldable phones, 200,000 times seems to be standard for foldable phones as it guarantees users at least a few years’ worth of use before they will face any issues with the hinge mechanisms.
Other companies such as Oppo and Xiaomi have configured their phones to withstand even more folds, as much as 400,000. However, even at 200,000, users can get a few years of use, provided that there is no other wear and tear to the phone.
The 200,000 folds have stayed the same for Samsung Fold phones over the years, but the new hinge design may change the game for Samsung. The new water drop hinge design, something already utilized by other foldable phones, will help the phone achieve a thinner design and fully close without a visible gap.
The new design will also make the crease less visible. All of these benefits were recently demonstrated by Samsung display at CES 2023. They showed that the phone could fold both ways, which sparked rumors that Samsung may be switching up its design this year with the Galaxy Z Fold 5.
The Elec also reported that the new hinge design would allow Samsung to replace its two separate digitizers with a single one. The reliability of this single digitizer has yet to be tested. However, users will have to make some compromises as it seems as if there won’t be any built-in S-pen.
