Qualcomm is always looking to push smartphones to new heights by creating powerful chips every year. This year it seems like the company may be re-evaluating the chip and focusing on strengthening it differently. The latest round of leaks comes from Twitter user Kuba Wojciechowski who tweeted that the SoC may have a different configuration than its predecessors.
Initially, the leaks about the new SoC revealed that the Qualcomm chip was codenamed Lanai and had a core configuration of 1+5+2. Recent leaks and updates show that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile platform allegedly contains a 2+3+2+1 core configuration. This vastly differs from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s configuration, which was 1+4+3. The leak suggests that the upcoming SoC will likely comprise silver, gold, titanium, and gold+cores, respectively.
According to Wojciechowski, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will be the first chip ever to contain a titanium cluster. Still, little is known about how it differs from other kinds of chips and its impact on a phone’s performance. The running theory states that a titanium cluster will offer more cache or could be clocked higher. Furthermore, the core leak for this chip states that the codenames “Hunter” and “Hayes” refer to the unannounced CPU cores for the chip.
It is also rumored that the new chip will be dropping 32-bit support, meaning Qualcomm’s new chip will probably only support 64-bit, as the company’s code hinted. This means that future launches may include more 64-bit-only phones. This change was probably made after the launch of the Pixel 7, which is the first Android phone to be 64-bit only.
The leaks also suggest that the new chip will support stronger and more stable graphics because of the added Adreno 750 GPU. For now, the GPU’s maximum frequency is estimated at around 770MHz, but it may change. The last round of rumors for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is about its release date. According to previous release dates, this SoC is presumed to launch in October 2023, which would put it a month prior to when the 8 Gen 2 was released last year.
