The last time fans saw a Ubisoft game released on Steam was back in 2019 when Trials Rising was released. Afterward, Ubisoft released its new PC games exclusively on Ubisoft Connect and Epic Games Store. They also never released any information on whether they will ever put their games on Steam again.
Some information gathered from the Ubisoft client backend indicates that Ubosft may be back at Steam’s door. The most recent Ubisoft games that didn’t receive a Steam release include Assassin’s Creed Valhalla in 2020 and Roller Champions, released this year. According to the YoobieRE Github organization working on a SteamDB equivalent for Ubisoft Connect, Ubisoft is hiding something interesting.
They found a couple of new sets of product information from Ubisoft Connect’s database. One of these products included the label ‘Internal Dev/QC – Assassins Creed Valhalla [STEAM].’ There is another one labeled ‘Roller Champion Steam.’ Additionally, back in 2021, Steam DB noted that a version of the Ubisoft Connect client showed up in the Steam Database.
Many speculate that these products are Steam versions of the games. If they actually exist, players will still require the Ubisoft Connect client. One reason why Ubisoft may finally be releasing its games on Steam again is that it is a popular site that many large publishers use.
EA, Microsoft, and Activision now all use Steam to release their games after they realized how much more exposure their games can get on such a platform. For example, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s PC sales doubled, primarily due to its Steam release. Although in the past, a few companies like Activision and Epic departed, Steam still remains the center of PC game distribution.
Since Epic launched its store in 2018, they have been trying to entice developers to release their games on the Epic Store. They argue that the Epic Games Store has a 12% cut, which is fairer than Steam’s 30% cut. This may be another reason Ubisoft may have been reluctant to release its games on Steam again.
The backend Ubisoft Connect data is not confirmed. Still, it seems likely that sooner or later, Ubisoft will start releasing its games on Steam again.
